A Domain for Scotland

Dateline November 2005
At present there is no official specifically Scottish domain. Technically,
Scotland is part of the United Kingdom and comes under dot UK domains
such as .co.uk and .org.uk
A campaign some time ago for a specifically Scottish sub-domain under
.uk came to nothing. There is some background in this Scottish
Parliament Information Notice from 2000 (pdf file) and on this
Nominet page from 2001.
There has also been some selling of the dot sc (.sc) domain as a Scottish
identity. However .sc is actually the Seychelles and, however nice it
looks, there are some
warnings about using this domain. The official registrar for .sc
domains is Atlas Seychelles
Ltd
There have been other suggestions for top level Scottish domain names
based on Alba, such a .aa and .ab, which have come to nothing.
Now, late in 2005, there is a further push to celebrate the culture
and languages of Scotland through the creation of a specifically Scottish
top level domain - this time dot sco .sco
For decades many Scots travelling abroad with their cars have displayed
the completely unofficial SCO sticker. Now the effort is to make SCO
a "virtual reality" !!
Further information about the campaign for .sco can be found at dotSCO
- the campaign for a .sco internet domain where support can also
be registered.
