More than 35m new Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) were wired up around
the world during 2004 as demand for broadband continued to soar.
By the end of 2004 there were 97m DSL lines around the world - an increase
of 60 per cent on the year, according to research from Point
Topic.
China heads the DSL league table with 17m lines - up 4.4m on the year.
The US has 13.7m DSL lines.
Demand for DSL continues to be strong in Europe with France, UK, Germany
and Italy all adding more than 1m lines each over the year.
On April 25th 2005 the Scottish Executive has announced that all
Scotland's Communities will have Broadband by the end of 2005.
In the UK, BT announced that they would pass 5 million broadband connections
in week commencing 4th April 2005, stating that this was one year ahead

Press Release British Telecom is predicting that:-
- "The UK economy could be boosted by up to 7.5 billion pounds
through productivity gains attributed to broadband
- Up to 16 billion fewer miles could be driven as broadband enables
more people to work from home and shop online
- Every school child in Britain will be able to learn via broadband
- More than 18 million people in the UK will be shopping online
- Millions of hospital outpatient appointments will be booked over broadband.”
