Europe reports broadband growth

2nd June 2005

The take-up of broadband among member states of the European Union is growing fast.

The Commission has revealed there are now 40 million broadband lines in the EU - up 70 per cent on last year - with an extra 45,000 lines being added each day.

The fastest-growing broadband nation is The Netherlands, while others in the lead of broadband take-up are France and the United Kingdom.

Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding said

"These broadband figures are very impressive and extremely encouraging for the future. Broadband is central to Europe's competitiveness and prosperity.

"Growth in broadband supply and take-up leading to lower prices, greater choice and more innovative offerings for business and consumers. We need to keep up this momentum."

What Does this Mean for Scottish and UK Business ?

  • This means that adoption of e-Business processes by European businesses continues and the potential for introducing more complex use of e-Business increases.
  • This means that more, and more regular, use is being made of e-mail, i.e. no longer is it a case of logging on every now and again to see if there's any messages for you - e-mail is now "on demand" and almost immediate.
  • This means that the web is more and more being used as a business tool - so your website could be very much more that just a simple marketing device. Does your website provide the correct information that people will be looking for - does it market to your public customers and to potential business customers - what are the potentials for your product or service - time to start thinking outside the box a little?
  • This means that business will increasingly use the always-on nature of broadband to allow total interaction between you company IT systems, mobile staff, partners, suppliers and customers.

What Does this Mean for YOUR Business ?

  • At the very least, you should be investigating the possibilities and potentials that broadband technology and e-business integration offer your company.
  • It may not be possible or realistic or affordable to do everything that is possible in one big step - but it is practical to start understanding what is achievable and start making plans.
  • By laying down plans you will being to understand what can be achieved quickly, where synergies exist between technologies and which are best introduced together.
  • By formalising a plan for you e-Business expansion you will see more clearly where you want to get to in the future and will save money in the longer term by ensuring that staged introductions are compatible with your long term plans.
